Unit 1.7 - Order and Disorder
Artist Analysis
Michael Mapes
Michael Mapes is known to employ the use of a visual metaphor suggesting a 'pseudoscientific method' signifying entomological, biological and forensic science. To the further side of taking and colltecting loads of photographs thoughtfullly gathers "biographical DNA" which can imply numerous forms such a personal statistics, handwriting samples and genealogical information.
Three of Michael Mapes images with analysis' -
This image is my favourite one because it looks like Michael Mapes actually cut off body parts from a hand, mouth, eye etc which makes the image produce surreal and abstract features on top of further on after the chaos of the 'chopped up' objects all of the patterns formed in each part of the picture are
exceedingly symmetrical. |
I find this picture effective and creative because I like how the variety of different objects in the picture blend into making a face which really draws attention to the picture and the use of tubes, glass vials, plastic bags etc all in their own way have something that visually makes up and identity of someone.
|
This image is particularly appealing because you can have many different opinions and perspectives on it. For example, from a distance you could see the consolidated image yet up-close the objects on the photo look like dispersed, beside the point bits of materials.
|
Aleksandra Domanovic
Aleksandra Domanović’s work is concerned with the circulation and reception of images and information, especially as they change meaning and switch register, bisect different contexts and historical circumstances. Her works build astonishing taxonomies and frenzied associative chains that poke and prod at copyright laws, unpack the "geopolitical" implications of web domains, or explore for example, the model of exhibitions.
This image is simple but effective. It has a main body which is a statue of a man with his head and shoulders in the centre of the image. I like how the background is plain so the statues body is the main focus with the three colours on the surface of the frame. I also like how the main colour of the body is blue and then it has white and yellow stripes imprinted in different parts and separate lines which create a nice contrast with each other and how they give off a sense of lightning that is about to strike.
|
I like this photo because it gives off a surreal feeling of a sculptured arm and hand coming out of a wall with some sort of pen and pad. I like the use of colours in this image because of how there are only three and they all compliment each other. With the use of gold on the hands, pen and pad on you're eyes are naturally pinched to the image.
|
This image is my favourite because you can't help but stare at the incredible detail in the photo of the different stacks of paper with inkjet printing that is covering contrasting sections of the pages. Another reason as to why this is my favourite is because of its effectiveness and sharpness that it has. For example the individuals pieces of paper are so delicate and enthral and also how the stack of paper is in such a firm and acute position.
|
Andreas Gursky
Andreas Gursky is a German photographer and professor. He is known for his large format architecture and landscape colour photographs, often operate a high point of view.
Three of Andreas Gurskys images with analysis' -
I chose to write about this image because I like how you can notice every small detail in this photograph and I really like the use of colour that is being brought out and that makes it active as it is eye catching.
|
I love how this photograph gives the illusion that everyone is rushing around all over the place creating chaos and also giving the image a sense of rush hour. This is also effective because it gives of a sense of movement in the image and that nothing is just still and there is life going on.
|
I particularly like this image because I like the way the colours blend in with each other and how it creates a colourful, bright, eye catching contrast between each object in the picture. I like how the objects are piled on top of eachother and are almost all symmetrical to one another.

Summer Task
For this homework task, I had to take pictures each of the days that I felt represented Order and Disorder best. I also went to a gallery which the slideshow below includes some images of.

TASK 1
FIRST RESPONSE (CW)
FIRST RESPONSE (CW)
For this task I asked my model to sit down and for her/him to look directly into the camera and to move hers/his head from side to side so I could capture each of their movement. I then took some pictures from left, right, centre, up and down of some trees so it would look like the wind was very strong and that they were blowing from side to side. I then wanted to experiment with my photos to make them look more interesting. To do this I shot pictures of a hand moving in different directions to make it look like it is waving. I then got a model to put her hands up through another models top and to move their hand to each side of the others face to make it look like she was being hit. Then, I also captured different heights and displays of my laptop screen so it looked like it was opening and closing.

Task 2
Second Response
(homework task)
For this homework task I wanted to develop and make my gifs better. In order to do this I set my camera up on a tripod and used new objects such as Paddington Bear toy figure and a train spelling my name.
WWW- I developed my gif photos by setting my camera up on a tripod to have a steady image and making the moving objects stand out well.
EBI- If I experimented with different objects to expand on creating the gifs.

Romain Laurent is a french photographer and director who currently lives in New York City. He studied product design at the National School of Applied Arts in Paris and he then discovered that photography is a much better way for him to show people his "strange ideas" so he went on to study that field at Gobelins in Paris and since then he has been working on his own personal projects and in advertising.
Romain Laurent
I like this gif because its of a perhaps teenage girl or a girl in her early twenties positioned in the whole right half of the gif in focus with loads of different lights covering her face and wall which draws ones consideration to the animation. I like the use of colour in this gif as they all compliment each other and give a very nice vibrant feel to the action.
|
I like this gif because the model is positioned in the right side of the animation with a shadow in the centre behind him moving around in a dancing movement. This immediately draws your attention to the gif and makes your eyes want to stare at this endlessly.
|
This gif is particularly eye catching as the man is in focus with the background out of focus. This is effective because he is the centre of attention and with his whole body being completely still apart from his hands moving really give this animation a sharp, sophisticated feel.

Symmetrical Order
Task 1-
For this task I went around South Wing in my school looking out for areas that demonstrate architectural symmetry and show compositions in the series of photos that I take.

Sasha Levin has a series in which he photographs symmetry in architecture using people as central points. By adding a human fundamentals to his work, he brings an action to the pictures which is not often found in architectural photography.

Homework title: Portrait disorder/Architectural symmetry
Teacher comment:
Portrait disorder: Well done a strong second response to improve them further you experiment creating a close up portrait using long exposure shots to create a blurred portrait. Also use a tripod to avoid jerkyness.
Architectural symmetry:The work you have produced is excellent and displays a strong understanding of the techniques discussed in class.
Student comment: WWW,EBI

William S Burroughs
William S Burroughs was one of the most dominant American writers of the 20th century. Despite his prolific achievements as a novelist, painter and spoken word performer, William's word as a photographer is rarely acknowledged. "Taking Shots" is the first exhibition worldwide to focus on his vast photographic work and it offers important and rarely new insights to hi artistic and creative processes.
Water Balloons Response
For this response, I put my camera onto sports mode which meant that this setting could help me take better commotion shots of the balloon popping. This mode usually automatically sets the camera to increase its shutter speed so the photographer can freeze the action in the frame. This setting was very helpful and appropriate in this task as I could capture the balloon about to be popped, being popped and when it has popped.
WWW- I captured the balloons exploding at the right time and got them to present 'disorder' well.
EBI- I experimented with other sources of liquid other than water.

Water Balloons - Second Response
For this response, I decided to use a different source of liquid other than water so I got three different colours of food colouring and put them into a balloon and then used a knife to burst the balloon causing it to explode.
WWW- I captured the balloons at the right time and managed to represent the disorder once the balloon had been stabbed.
EBI- The green colouring was a different colour due to the fact that the backdrop was green trees so the explosion in a way got hidden by the trees in the background.

Further Development
For this development I got some food colouring and poured colouring into a glass of water and captured each moment of the process in order to present the reaction when the food colouring is mixed with the water. To do this I set my camera to 'M' which is manual exposure so I could be in charge of the shutter speed, ISO and aperture and continuously pressed down on the shutter button before, during and after the reaction. I put all my pictures together onto a file and created a GIF on Photoshop with skills and knowledge that I have gained throughout this unit.

Harold Edgerton was a professor of 'electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is credited massively with transforming the 'stroboscope' from an obscure lab instrument into a common device. He also developed a love with the development of deep sea and sonar photography.
Three Strands Response
Strand 1 - Light Disorder
Artist Inspiration :
The reason why I chose this strand is because I feel like I can represent City Disorder very well and I enjoy photographing moving vehicles being captured to create long exposure. It links to 'Order and Disorder' because it shows the disorder of all the lights off of cars mixing and blending in with one an other and has different types of movements in different directions.
First Response - Cities Car Lights Disorder
For this response I went out to a busy road that has lots of traffic at in the nighttime, I used a tripod and positioned my camera so it had an overview of the road/area to create long exposure. To do this, I had my camera on a shutter speed of 8-16 seconds which I find helps me produce the better quality images and a small aperture to give the image a greater depth of field, making most of the image in focus and an iso being dependent on the aperture and shutter speed. I also chose to have a long exposure so more lines appeared and have the lines look longer.

To edit these pictures as the development I used the process below-
I also decided to present some of these images in a gif. Below is the outcome and the method that I used to create the gif itself.
Second Response -
Cars In The City
I also went to Waterloo as I knew there would be so many modes of transports stuck in traffic and there would constantly be moving vehicles so to present 'City Disorder', I shot multiple frames and then edited them on Photoshop into a GIF. Below is all of the images I took and the GIF itself.
Strand 2 - People Disorder
First Response - Human's Personalities Disorder .
ARTIST INSPIRATION : KATIE CRAWFORD
Katie Crawford is a surreal portraiture and she focuses on portraying her battle with depression and anxiety through photography. Crawford has inspired me hugely on this strand response as I feel like she represents the many different personalities or illnesses that people have, it represents the disorder of feelings in society. For this response I took pictures of some models and then edited their photos on photoshop to show some of many peoples mental disorders such as Depression, Bipolar, Eating Disorders, Substance Abuse etc, in a still image.
My Response:

Second Response - People in Light Disorder
For this response I photographed some models in a dark room where I had plugged in a Strobe Light which would be on very fast speeds of changing lights and also on slow speeds so I could experiment with what you could see in the images and how much light was shown in the images. Below is my response.
Further Development
I decided that I would like to edit some of my favourite images that I have taken in my above response to do a further development on my images.

Third Response - People in Disguise
For this response, I got a velvet sheet and tied it to a wooden frame. I then got my models to go on the other side of the sheet and place there hands on the material along with their faces to create a disguise-able look. I liked this response as the sheet hides the persons identity so it gives the photograph an unknown look and leaves the viewer wondering about the story behind the sheets.
Strand 3 - Typology
I have chosen to do Typology as one of my responses because I feel that it represents disorder extremely well with the many different types of people/objects that comes with it.
First Response - People
For this response I took multiple pictures of different people that I saw walking a long Southbank.

"Light Art (or Light Graffiti) for me had its humble beginnings back in summer 2004 in Greece when by chance, photographing a moonlit landscape went unexpectedly wrong. Unclipping the camera from its tripod, I quickly discovered that by putting the camera into long exposure I could move the camera in my hands and use the moon itself to write out a word. Buzzing with excitement, the next natural stage was to keep the camera on a tripod, and use torchlight to ‘draw’. Ever since then, I have been on a solitary journey of discovery, pushing the limits of my photographic knowledge, my imagination, and always overstepping the boundaries of what is feasibly possible. I find enormous reward in creating a piece of work that only exists in the moment; the only evidence of its existence recorded on camera. The environment; my canvas, is all that’s left behind, exactly as it was before my arrival. Filling an environment with 3 dimensional ‘brush strokes’, vibrancy, energy… turning the ordinary into the extra-ordinary… these are some of the things that drive me; fuels my passion." -Michael Bosanko
Stephanie Jung is a freelance photographer based in Berlin, Germany. In 2010 she finished her studies in Visual Communications, where she discovered her passion for experimental photography. She loves to "Travel all over the world, especially to big cities, to capture the vibrant and hectic mood of a place".
FIRST RESPONSE - VEHICLE LIGHTS IN THE CITY
For this response I decided to take pictures of vehicles driving by on a bridge by southbank with Big Ben in the background as it is a very famous building. To create the long exposure look I set my camera to the same settings as I did in my first response which was having a long shutter speed to capture the cars movement for what I found the best time to be around 8-16 seconds and I had a small aperture to give the image a greater depth of field. I also used a tripod to make the image sturdy and positioned my camera so it had an overview of the road/area. I again chose to have a long exposure so more lines appeared in the image.

Further Development
I decided that I would like to put my pictures into a GIF using photoshop. I also wanted to present another famous landmark in London as a gif instead of still images.
Second Response - People and Buildings in Movement Disorder
For this response, I photographed crowds of people at locations that I thought would have lots of people around. For the response below I went to a tube station at rush hour so there would be loads of people going up and down on the escalators. To present 'disorder' I set my camera to have a long shutter speed to blur all the people together.
Further Development
For my further development, I chose 8 of my favourite images that I have taken throughout my strand responses and used many skills and techniques that I have learnt throughout this Unit and in previous units, then put them to use on Photoshop. The methods that I used was duplicating layers and changing the opacity of the layers, copy and pasting the images multiple times and flipping them vertically and horizontally creating a symmetrical look etc. I feel like this would create a strong development as my images represented disordered and ordered feels as in some images there would be overlapping with different opacities which would create disorder and then when I duplicated layers and flipped them around to create a symmetrical look which represented order.
THIRD RESPONSE -
LIGHT IN ISOLATED AREAS
For this response I went to rural areas in London to photograph sources of light. I was inspired to take these photographs by a famous photographer called 'Gilles Coulon".
Gilles Coulon's work really inspired me to look into 'Light' photography as I like the way he captures images with light being the main focus of the image making it eye catching.
My Response - Single Lights
FOURTH RESPONSE :
NEON BRIGHT LIGHTS
For my third response I decided that I wanted to go onto focus more on Bright lights for example Neon Lights. To prepare and plan for this response, I made a mindmap on location and photographing ideas to help me create a wide brainstorm. The mindmap I created is below-
After creating my mindmap, I decided that the place where there would be loads of bright neon lights on very beautiful and photogenic attractions was at a famous funfair called 'Winter Wonderland' in Hyde Park, London. The type of style of the photographs that I wanted to take were still images and also experiment with Zoom Blur. To create a zoom blur affect I had a slow shutter speed and I changed the focal length of the lens on my camera whilst the picture was being exposed.
Below are all of my images that I took, displayeed on a contact sheet with a couple of my favourite images which I edited on Photoshop.
DEVELOPMENT
After photographing single lights and neon lights, I decided to photograph neon coloured lights as a single light. I found this interesting as I could get close up images of the lights and capture each detail of the image. I also thought that the outcome would be effective as the light would be the only thing in the image and it would be the main focus.
Artist Inspiration : Dan Flavin
Dan Flavin was an American artist that was famous for creating sculptural objects and installations from fluorescent light fixtures.
Fourth Response - Neon in isolated areas
For this response I decided to link lights in isolated areas with taking pictures of single neon lights to bring my past three responses together into one. To do this I went to tube stations, garages and shops at night. I chose to photograph in the dark because I thought that the locations I had chosen would stand out and the colours would look clear and vibrant.
Final Piece
Visual Brainstorm-
Artist Inspiration : Karen Hoyt
For my Final Piece I have chosen to photograph more pictures of garages at night to develop and improve on my pictures above.
