SET TASKS
Task 1 : Portrait - Past, Present, Future.
For this task, I took portrait images of my classmates and then found an image online of an old person and using a tutorial online (which I will insert below) I merged the two photos together to create an 'Aged Portrait'.
My Response: Photoshop Edit
Phone App Edit
I decided that I would like to experiment more with making young people look older so I downloaded an app on my phone called 'Oldify' and took a picture of myself and someone else and pressed 'Create', then an old persons characteristics appeared on our faces.

Bobby Neal Adams Response
Examples of Bobby Neal Adams work:
For this homework task, I took pictures of my friends and then on Photoshop I merged the faces together to show how appearances change over time.
Task 2 : Location - Past, Present, Future.
I will be doing a response to the 'Dear Photograph' project which was created by the photographer Taylor Jones. Jones took old photographs that he had found and went back to the location that they were originally shot in. He would then hold the old image up and combine it into the photo of the modern location.

My Response:
For this task, I got a few pictures of my family members and some of my friends and with the person that was in the photograph, we revisited the location that the picture was taken in and matched it up with the modern location. I then expanded on my location so I went to Central London and did the same thing with the photographs.
Extension Task
For this extension I recreated a series of old family photographs in the style of Irena Werning and Clarisse d'Arcimoles' work.

Gallery Visit - Tate Modern
'Performing for the Camera'
This exhibition explores the relationship between photography and performance, engaging with serious, provocative and sensational topics, as well as humour, improvisation and irony. The exhibition shows how photographs have captured performances by artists including Yves Klein and Yayoj Kusama and ground breaking collaborations between photographers, performers and dancers. It looks at how artists including Francesca Woodman, Erwin Wurm and others have used photography as a stage on which to perform and explore identities through images.

Southbank Walk
For these series of photographs, I walked along Southbank and photographed buildings and different architecture that I thought represented past (old looking buildings, bridges), present (modern day buildings, bridges, skyscrapers) and future (buildings with scaffolding on to represent it being built for the future).
Three Strand Response
For the three strands response, I am going to choose 3 topic titles that I feel are strong representations of this exam unit title 'Past, Present and/or Future.' and I will then photograph pictures that I feel represent each strand.
Strand 1 : Growth of the City
This strand is to show a wide view of the cities landscape from the top of a building. I thought this would be a good idea for a Strand as having a wide panoramic view meant that I could show just how big the city is as it's from a wide perspective. I then decided that once I had made the picture into a panorama, I would duplicate the tall building on the right and extend the skyline by duplicating the original one. Doing this meant that 'Future' would come into the picture as I was showing the city growing and the population expanding.
Strand 2 : Double Exposure
For this strand, I wanted to portray the busy day to day life in transport and light in the city. I plan to duplicate photos, change the opacity of them and then flattern the images and for some add a grayscale effect. I like the idea of this as the photographs are off buildings and transport in modern day however with all the effects that they have such as the filters, the duplication of photographs and the opacity changes on each layer, it can look like someone has painted these images a long time ago which can illustrate 'Past'.

Strand 3 : Old and New Architecture
I chose to do this strand as I feel like it strongly represents this title as it shows the different ways in which certain rooms or buildings have aged as time has gone on.

Old & New Combined:
Developed Strand - Growth of the City
To develop further I wanted to create Panoramic photos and some GIF of what London may look like in the future. The programmes that I used to edit all of my images were Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Lightroom.
First Response : Panoramic City
For this response, I created panoramic photos by using several photos taken in a horizontal direction. I then used photoshop to automatically stitch the different photos together and then I used photoshop to cut of several skylines that I took photos of on other photo shoots. After that, I used the skylines that I took to create a new skyline. Once I had done that I imported the photos into Adobe Lightroom, changed the filters into Black and White and then adjusted the tones, neutrals, brightness and intensity of the images to create a dark mood for the images.
Second Response : Evolving City
For this response, I decided to create two Visual Gif's to show 'London of the Future'. I liked this idea as it shows how many buildings get built everyday and how fast the population of the City is growing. To create this gif, I imported some pictures that I have taken from The Shard and the Sky Garden onto Photoshop to cut out the sky scrapers. I then placed them onto a scene where I had a large wide shot and edited them to make them all match up with the background layer.
Final Piece Build Up
For my Final Piece, I have used multiple skills that I used in my two above responses. I decided that I would like physical printed photographs as my final piece instead of a visual GIF. So with the skills I used for my Panoramic City (first response) and the GIF (second response) I took multiple photographs, then stitched them together in photoshop. I then used the clone tool to get rid of objects that didn't fit the photo such as extra parts of buildings and lampposts in both sides of the bottom of the screen. I then copied several skylines into the image using Photoshop and created a skyline of Future London.
Artist Inspiration : Marcus Lyon
In Marcus Lyon's project 'Brics' he shows what he thinks the big city's of the earth will look like in the future with the problem of over population. He has mirrored buildings and made the landscape look active and over crowded.
Below are some images of Lyon's work.

Artist & Me
Marcus Lyon Me
In Marcus Lyon's series called Brics, he took photos of some huge cities from a helicopter then in post production he added tot he photo to make it seem more busy and over populated. His whole project was based on the idea that each city is going to have to deal with the fact that there will be an ever growing human population, day by day. I liked this project as all the photos were extremely well edited and it also made me realise how many buildings there are in the scene and in fact in the world. This then led me onto thinking about over population which is good as it gets myself and others to think about the future of the planet that we live on.
|
My work below is similar to Marcus Lyon's work as I have duplicated layers of buildings to make it look overcrowded. However my project isn't based on over population although you could, if you wanted to, interpret it the same way as Lyon's work. Mine is different as I focused on a wider shot of the city instead of just one point. It was also different as I only took this image at the top of a building whereas he took his from a helicopter which meant he could get multiple angles, unlike me. Nonetheless, Marcus Lyon's has hugely inspired me in this exam unit as well as giving me ideas for my responses.

View from The Shard & The Sky Garden
Going up to the top of The Shard and the Sky Garden allowed me to create panoramic futuristic landscape skylines of London. I thought that going up The Shard and the Sky Garden would be a good idea of a place where I could take pictures for my Final Piece as these places are in the centre of London and very high so it would be a really good location to create a panorama of London. I'm going to use Photoshop to edit just like I have done above in my first response. Once I have created the panoramic pictures I will then add in skyscrapers that I have previously photographed and then match them up to the panoramic image layer to create the futuristic skyline look. Once I have finished that, I'll import the final image into Adobe Lightroom and do some final adjustments to make all the buildings the same exposure, varying the contrast and texture. I'll also create a Black and White look, whilst also changing the tones, neutrals, brightness and intensity of the image to create a strong, silver, high contrast, industrial steel-like image.
Editing my Final Piece
Below are my 'Before' and 'After' pictures of my panoramic photographs.
Final Piece Speed Edit
This is a video of how I edited one of my final piece photographs. I have sped it up using iMovie as it took quite a while to complete which meant that it would be very long to watch. I added some background music to the video to
